The first of our line of double door, wire trigger, powered door cage traps came out in April of 2010, finally broke the ice as it were.  From there were had a series of firsts, first small 18 inch double door trap for chucks, a real space saver.  First to take raccoons in chimneys with our standard unmodified trap set vertically.  First to take a raccoon in a hanging trap screwed into a ceiling, again in a vertical position.  First to build a double door, powered door, wire trigger beaver trap tp catch beaver in traps set upside down and sideways in runs like a conibear trap.  First to catch fish in a beaver trap, a catfish in Florida and a now a carp in N.Y.

Today's catch of the day in two traps set side by side was a large beaver and a nice carp, about 5-6 pounds.  

A Case for Double Door Traps

Though at Comstock Custom Cage we do make and sell single door traps, the primary objective in this endeavor is to provide superior equipment along with the most effective methods that offer more options and versatility, which simply put, is a double door trap over a single door trap, something that should not be difficult to grasp.  Those using single door traps like having a second bait door in order to make placing or changing bait easier and faster, so why no make the bait door a working door.  The double door trap has the option of usage as a bait door as an added byproduct, while at the same time is a functioning door to be used in a pass through situation.

Single door traps are  a one dimensional tool, limited to taking animals coming from one direction period, which is exactly half of what a double door will do.  A double door trap, open at both ends, gives the approaching animal a degree of confidence not felt in a single door trap.  Instead of a dead end in a single door trap with wire at the far end, the animal can see through the trap, removing the feeling of confinement.   

Double door traps not only have the option of being used with bait with either one or both doors open, but can be used in trail sets where animals are simply moving from one location to another, often following structure, a fence, a wall, or terrain, a ditch, a ridge.  Placed at den locations, double door traps shine simply because it is not always possible to determine if the resident is in or out.  No sense guessing with a single door trap, while potentially guessing incorrectly about the direction from which the animal is coming and instead of catching an animal coming from a den actually block one from returning.  Just place the double door trap and take any animal either coming from or entering the den.  

Cage Trap Invention, Trapping, And Trap Related Information

The bulk of my life has been spent engaged in the pursuit of wildlife through trapping, beginning with fur trapping in the 1960's, in time evolving into ADC trapping, Animal Damage Control.  Though I have used a great variety of traps over the years, humane live cage type traps have become the primary tool of choice in the work I do.  When not actively working in the field setting traps, much of my remaining time has been devoted to developing superior methods to capture animals, while using and now inventing the very best live cage trapping equipment available.  Having written about a number of traps over the years of all types in numerous articles, I began developing much of my own equipment, most recently, box traps.  After promoting products made by a number of different companies, we are now sharing not only what we have developed in the best live animal traps ever made, but also innovative ways to use them.  Best is a subjective term, so specific details about what we have will be furnished along with, not only tips in how the best can be used, but proven techniques for anyone to use to improve, novice or professional.

The first traps we are producing have a 9x11 opening in lengths from 18 inches to 36 inches with a wire triggering system and powered doors unlike any other box traps made by the prominent established companies.  Fastest in the world, our traps can be set not only right side up and on land like conventional pan type traps, but function perfectly in any position, upside down, sideways or even vertically.  Furthermore, they will work in water and under water!

We have a beaver trap now ready to mass produce and should shortly have a squirrel trap too.  In time there will be chimney traps, bobcat traps, perhaps a coyote trap and others.
